On Wednesday, March 13 and Thursday, March 14, 2024, following the official project launch in January 2024, the ESCORT project kick-off meeting was held at the Research Center for Information Dissemination of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

ESCORT is a 36-month research project funded by the Horizon Europe research and innovation funding program. The project builds on the results of the NO-FEAR project and aims to make significant advances in the field of Internet of Things, wearables, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to contribute to improved patient care and resilience of European health and care services.

The 12-partner consortium that gathered for the kick-off meeting has the expertise of 6 technical partners and 6 leading healthcare providers from 5 European and 1 associated member state. The healthcare providers specialise in emergency medicine and offer regular health and care services in 6 countries (Greece, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Israel). The interdisciplinary collaboration will result in the introduction of new methodologies and technical interventions to improve pre-, post- and emergency care services specifically adapted to the 3 scenarios. The scenarios include managing hospitalisation due to natural disasters (e.g., forest fires or earthquakes), managing chronic diseases, and assessing the impact on regular treatment due to cross-border emergencies and emerging health threats.

The main activities of the project include:

  • Establishing a patient engagement group that will facilitate health and care services through co-design and co-production of innovative digital tools.
  • Development of innovative patient services to improve the care quality.
  • Optimising resources and operational efficiency to promote a balance between emergency medical care and regular health and care services.
  • Development of innovative AI-based technologies.
  • Evidence-based recommendations contribute to the health and care sustainability in the EU.

The project’s digital tools are to be tested by three case studies, and a curriculum will be developed to train health and care professionals in the use of advanced medical solutions.
